Doesn’t affect use at all, but it was weird, and I went to a lot of trouble to make sure I wasn’t just nuts - so you get the benefit of the photographic proof. \u003cbr\u003eThese were made before dishwashers and microwaves were in use.  I would not recommend putting these in the dishwasher, as it will likely wear the finish off over time.  They are probably fine for the microwave, but I can't make any claims that its perfectly safe. \u003cbr\u003ePerfect for your morning coffee, to use at your work desk, or just to hang as decor in your mid century era kitchen.
